Welcome to Safer Gaming. We are a new and young NGO whose goal is to promote research, education and treatment of gambling addiction. As sports betting, fantasy sports and casino games become more popular and more available – thanks to the internet – we see a rise in people suffering with addiction to these games. However, we do not see a similar increase in research, treatment or funding of this problem.
One area where we see a minimal amount of change is in education. Addiction is a topic covered by most degree level psychology courses. However, there are very few courses focusing on addiction at a higher level and, so far, we have been unable to locate a course focused on research and treatment of gambling addiction.
US$1,000 Scholarship Available
We are proud to announce the launch of what we hope will be an annual scholarship. In 2016 it is available to one student, continuing their studies in psychology (major), who submits the best essay of between 1,000 and 1,500 words on the subject described below.
This competition is open to any student currently in a three or four year course with a main focus on psychology (major). The student must be attending an accredited university. Since we recognise that gambling addiction is a problem to people in many countries, this competition is open to students from any country. However, only essays in English will be considered.
What one action do you believe is the most important to limit the spread of gambling addiction in a country and why? If you had the opportunity, how would you implement this action?
Selecting A Winner
Safer Gaming’s three founders will read all submissions and make the decision to award the prize to the essay that they believe to be the most actionable, but creative, answer to the above question. Whilst papers will not be specifically discounted for grammatical errors, we plan to publish the winning entry on this website and circulate it to our partners, therefore, we ask that entrants focus on a high level of literacy.
